Costa Rica in July, Any Thoughts/Advice?

Cross-posting this with r/costa_rica

I like to do my research before going on trips. My family’s vacation to Costa Rica next month is meant to be dedicated to relaxing and bonding, so it would probably be best to avoid any undue stress due to any surprises or details that we hadn’t considered.

So here’s the deal: I posted here a while ago about taking my family on vacation in Italy (Amalfi Coast), but after realizing it wouldnt have been a great fit, my family decided to go to Costa Rica instead.

Guanacaste from July 20-22, La Fortuna from 23-27.

I’m aware that it will be hot and probably rainy too, but we’ve made our peace with that. That week in July is the only time that my father has time off from work at the same time that my sisters are off from work or summer school. Moving the date of the trip is not possible, so suggestions like that won’t be helpful.

If you’ve been there before in the summer, what is the one thing you did not pack that you wish you had? How did you beat the heat or what did you do when it rained too much?

My family is renting a mini-van to get around. How’s traffic/parking? How’s the terrain on the roads? Any traffic laws or patterns we should be aware of?

What was your Costa Rican summer vacation like? What do you think would have been good to know before you go?

Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated! Thank you!
