How can I attempt to get a refund for a trip purchased but now unable to travel due to a medical situation of a spouse?

So it’s not really for me but for my aunt. She was planning to travel to Europe to witness her niece (my cousin) graduate in Budapest. However, her husband was attacked near their home and is currently in the hospital after multiple surgeries, which makes it impossible for her to take this trip. Therefore she wants to cancel and get a refund. She didn’t purchase travel insurance or anything.

I haven’t contacted the airlines on her behalf which she has asked me to do. I don’t have any experience in contacting airlines about getting a refund thus I wanted to get some advice or any information you might be able to provide to expedite the refund. The original trip was to take place a week from today.

British Airways is the airline.
