I'm planning a 17 day trip to Indonesia for my honeymoon. We're looking for a good mix of cultural sites, outdoor adventures, and beachy relaxation. I'm a landscape photographer who's happy to wake up early to catch sunrise from beautiful locations. A large reason I want to go to Indonesia is the beautiful landscapes and potential for great photos. My fiancée is always down to tag along on these adventures but also wants dedicated periods of relaxation in beachy area(s).
Currently I feel like my itinerary is way too busy, as I'm trying to hit a lot of spots and see all I can. What would you cut, change, or add in order to decrease the amount of time lost to travel, and increase time spent in areas that would suit our goals?
---
Ubud (3 days)
- Fly into Denpasar/Bali
- Arrive in the evening of Day 1
- Spend 2 full days exploring the area around Ubud
- Hike around in rice terraces and do photography
Nusa Penida (2 days)
- Morning boat to Nusa Penida
- Check into hotel, get a driver, explore beaches and sites on the island over the remaining 1.5 days.
- ((Despite the beautiful views, a recent friend told me to completely skip Nusa Penida as it's over-crowded, filled with instagrammers, and the terrible roads make for gridlocked traffic that prevent easy exploration. Should I skip Nusa Penida entirely and give this time to somewhere else, or spend time on Nusa Lembongan instead? Maybe I give this time to Bali instead so we get to chill longer once we first arrive.))
Lombok (2 days)
- Morning boat back to Bali
- Boat out to Lombok
- Check into hotel and explore the area for the remainder of the day and next day.
- ((Is it worth spending this time in Lombok or should I go straight to Gilli?))
- ((What town or area should we base ourselves in Lombok?))
Gilli Meno (3 days)
- Morning boat to Gilli Meno
- 3 days spend lounging and wandering the island
- ((This is where I see our core "relaxation time" happening. Is this a good spot and good amount of time, or should I reconsider/adjust?))
Flores (2 days)
- Travel day
- Morning boat back to Bali
- Afternoon flight from DPS to Flores
- Evening hotel check in
- Day trip to Komodo
- Explore and take photos at sunset on Padar Island if possible
- ((This seems like a lot of travel for a small amount of time - essentially just one day to explore, with two full days of boat trips on both sides of it. Would it be OK to skip Komodo or is this enough of a draw that I should spend more time here that's taken from another area of the itinerary?))
Yogyakarta (2 days)
- Travel Day
- Morning flight to Bali
- Flight to Yogyakarta
- Spend the remainder of the day exploring town
- 2 full days to check out Borobadur / Prambanan and the local area
- Take a night train to Malang
Malang (3 days)
- Arrive in the morning
- 3 full days to explore the area
- Mt. Bromo sunrise tour ((This is something that looks really great and I'd like to incorporate, but it definitely eats up a large amount of travel time and days. Is this worth it for the experience, views, and photography or can I get this elsewhere?))
- Night train back to Yogyakarta
Travel day back home. Back to Yogyakarta, then Denpasar/Bali to fly out.
- Big travel day of a night train, Yogya to Bali flight, then Bali to Taipei, and Taipei back home to the US.
