I want to visit South America and Mexico but I'm starting to get an odd feeling about doing it through Intrepid Travel.

I was planning to book a few trips around South America and Mexico through Intrepid Travel, as it'll be my first time alone in a foreign country, but I'm honestly wondering if I'll really get an accurate experience of the culture if I'm traveling around in a tour group. Has anyone here had experience with travel groups like this?
