Why are Americans always so specific when asked where they are from?

I mean absolutely no offense in this question I am just curious. I travel a lot and when asked where I am from I simply reply "Canada" same with other foreign travelers ive met, they simply say "france" or "Germany", or whatever country their from, whereas I've noticed many Americans respond with being so specific, usually the state or even the city. I find it kind of weird because not everyone knows where those places are but it is usually safe to assume it's the US because nobody else tends to be that specific unless they're speaking to someone from the same country. It's almost expected that everyone knows where Jacksonville is for example, I've simply told an American I was from Alberta and they asked me if that was somewhere in NY? I just find it strange sometimes because not many people outside of Canada know specific provinces or cities but Americans assume everyone knows what small town or city they're talking about. Sorry if this came off as offensive i however am truly just curious.
