Possible foreign exchange student here; I want to study for a semester abroad my senior year of high school in Spain. I've been looking into logistics, and the only option I've come across are the expensive (10k+) private programs that guarantee the "whole package". As an example, I'll be using Greenheart Travel, the seemingly best deal and the one I'll probably be going with. At first when I looked at the breakdown of the 12 thousand dollar pricetag, I assumed that the majority of the money was being payed toward the host family for housing and food, with flight and insurance costs packaged in afterward. However, I read on another part of the site that host families are purely voulenteers that aren't payed to feed or house you. This lead me, again, to question the price tag. Is this whole thing a rip off? Could I just orchestrate my own trip and stay with families of people I know from the country already? Why the huge price tag for these private programs? Can I study in Spain without having to be controlled by a company's guidelines?
