How warmly should I dress for northern Europe in October?

Hello all, absolute newbie to travel here.

I've never been outside of South Florida, so I'm not used to colder climates at all. This October, from the 10th to the 23rd, I'll be traveling to Berlin, Germany, and to Malmö, Sweden. What can I expect in terms of weather?! I mostly ask because I'm looking at winter clothes and they're fairly expensive, so while I'm willing to buy all the necessities, I want to make sure I'll actually use them. I am fairly sensitive to the cold.

Any other tips regarding culture or fun things to do in either city are welcome!
