8 days in Porto and... where else?

We're in early planning stage for a springtime visit to Portugal, flying into and out of Porto. We'll have 8 days/9 nights total... and that's the extent of my knowledge so far. Our primary plan is to explore Porto itself; walking around and discovering cool towns and cities is what we really love to do. But with that much time to spend, what would be your choice for a secondary location to stay offering nice scenery, interesting day trips, great local food & wine, maybe an historical or cultural site or two? And how would you split that time... 6- & 3-night stays?

EDIT: My bad, I should have been clearer that I'm thinking of someplace within a 60-ish mile radius of Porto, since we need to fly in and out from there. Also, we've already seen Lisbon/Belem/Sintra before (and yes, it's awesome).
