I'm on the fence about pulling the trigger on a flight to Peru. It would leave us with only 7-8 days there, excluding travel time. With a limited amount of time, I'm thinking focusing just on Cusco and the nearby region would be best. But I'm worried about how long it would take to adjust to altitude (never really been anywhere with high altitude) or whether I should just focus my trip instead on lower altitude parts of the country? Or do it instead when I could go for two weeks? My main questions are:
1) How many days should I expect to take it easy to adjust to altitude?
2) Where should I be staying during this time? Preliminary research is turning up some people saying Cusco and others saying at the lower elevation in the Sacred Valley?
3) What is there to do that would qualify under taking it easy in the area?
