Ok so here’s the thing:
We’re traveling to Oahu and are going to be staying in Makaha. When I’ve researched what the area is like, I see a bunch of forums talking about racism and crime in Waianae. Our friend in the Air Force is stationed in Honolulu and says pretty much the same thing.
I’m a little confused because I can’t find any information really on Makaha. I just want the real scoop on what this town is like on the island.
We live in Chicago, so crime is nothing new to us. But I found it interesting that so many people said that the leeward side of the island was racist...in a nutshell: “if you’re not open to other cultures, you’ll be subjected to racism”
Uhhhh, duh? Why would you expect to be treated nicely ANYWHERE if you’re not open to the differences in culture and ways of life?
I’d just like someone to shed a little light on the truths of this part of the island. Everyone thus far has just used “dangerous” and “impoverish” interchangeably which isn’t helpful. I just don’t want an entire community talked trash about wrongfully. It’s sad to me that so many people will disregard one part of a community because of rumors.
