Hi all, Turkish national here. I plan to attend a conference in Barcelona this coming February and need to get the Schengen visa. I've been infuriated by the amount of information mismatch on the Internet, so I'd really appreciate if you could help me out with clarifying a few things.

I've recently graduated and am currently waiting for work permit from a non-Schengen country. I've got about €500 in savings, already booked my flight and accommodation, and got invitation letter from the conference. Would these be enough for visa for a 6 days trip or do I need a sponsor?
-
For sponsorship, the BLS guide in my country says only parents and spouse can sponsor. Is this accurate? My older brother is more than willing to back me up but the BLS guide confused me. He is the citizen a non-Schengen country.

Would I need to check "tourism" or "business" on the application form? I won't be doing any business, but the conference I'll be attending is normally for professionals. Also I intend to attend the conference and have a trip both, but mostly I'll be at the conference venue.

If I'm given the visa for, say, 3 months, effective from the date of application, can I enter other countries in Schengen area prior to my entry to Spain? Or is it a risky move?
Thanks all!
