Mobile wifi hot spot device or temporary sim card while traveling ?

I'm going to Europe for 2 months backpacking through multiple EU countries. To keep in touch with my family in America I have been debating on using a temporary sim card. While browsing the internet I found a device that is a mobile wifi hot spot device. (It doesn't seem to have an identifiable name other than that.)

If anyone has experience with either the temporary sim or this "mobile wifi hot spot device" could you give me insight to your experience or some pros/cons?

Do you guys happen to know which would be better or how well either of them work?

Edit: to know what I'm talking about for this mobile wifi you can either look up "mobile wifi device for travel in Europe" and there will be many variations of the product I saw, or you can click on this link that will take you to a page advertising said device.

I am not nessicarily set on this specific one I'm just using it as an example.
