Can hotel staff know if you leave your room?

I’m not entirely sure if this question applies to this sub, so if not let me know and I’ll delete it.

I’m currently on a school trip through Oregon and one of the chaperones said that the hotel staff will let the chaperones know if we leave our rooms after 11. They don’t want us to leave, which makes sense, but this seems kind of concerning security wise. If someone knew when hotel residents left their room or weren’t there, couldn’t they break in or something?

I’ve never heard of this before and was just wondering if this was a scare tactic they made up or something newer.
