Hey folks,
Travelling to Sri Lanka ~12/12 through ~12/31. Wanted to see if my itinerary made sense/if anything was obviously missing. My priorities from most important to least: 1. Beach time , 2. A couple days of ruins/temples, 3. Tea Plantation experience(s), 4. See elephants.
My Rough Itinerary
- Arrive morning 12/12 in CMB airport. Immediately take train/bus to Dambulla/Polonnaruwa area. Spend ~2 days there (~1 for Sigiriya/Pidurangula, temples, 1 for an additional excursion to either Anuradhapura or wildlife).
- 12/14 train from Dambulla to Kandy. Hang out in Kandy for ~2 days doing Tea Plantation, hikes, cultural dance show etc.
- 12/17 Take train to Nuwara Eliya. Stay here 2-3 days. Do Adam's Peak. *12/20 Take train down to South Coast Beaches... Spend ~2 days in Matara
- 12/22 train or car over to Galle. Spend ~2 days here.
- 12/24 go to Bentota. Spend ~3 days in Bentota.
- 12/27 go to Columbo/Negombo. Spend last 2-3 days there before flying back.
Questions:
- Thoughts on Dambulla vs Polonnaurua vs Sigirya vs Habarana for places to stay?
- Ella vs Nuwara Eliya? Do both or one or the other?
- Are there any ethical elephant reserves/parks along my route (or would it make sense to adjust my route)?
- In Vietnam/Cambodia/Phillipines I was able to rent small motorcycles (the Honda bikes). Is that doable in Sri Lanka without an international license?
- Does it make sense to just show up and find homestays or do I need to reserve significantly in advance?
- Any major "miss" in my itinerary?
