US citizen travelling to London for a conference. What should I expect in terms of airport security?

Hi all,

As the title says I am traveling for a conference in Feb. We are flying SLC-LHR and back. I've never flown outside of north America so I just wanted to see what I should expect in terms of airport security? When I land at LHR I'm assuming I'll get vetted by immigration and if all goes well collect my things, but what about coming back? Will I be vetted on my way out, or immigration as I land in SLC? Or both? How early should I get back to LHR for security? We are staying in Docklands so unfortunately long commute.
