Couple questions for those who have been to New Zealand

So I’m gonna go. I need to decide if I want to this May or September2020/May 2021.

The main hold up is I need to decide if I’m going to head back to school or not this coming fall.

I go back to school this fall:

This would mean that I would most likely be waiting until May 2021- unless me schedule allows me to spend three weeks in New Zealand.

Where my main debate is.

If don’t go back to school:

This means I would be joining the work force so the best time to go would be May before I actually start my career. However, given my poor financial literacy this would require me to work 18 hours a week starting first week of Jan until the end of April. I have a second job that is around 20 hours. Like 40 hours total a week is not bad. However, I wasn’t really planning on picking up the extra 18 hours a week since I will have enough money come end of September

So the main debate. Do I do the extra 18 hours a week for like 4 months? My birthday is in May as well so this would mean I would be solo traveling celebrating it

Now for the questions I have specific to New Zealand.

From the blogs I have read they suggest about 4,000-5000 Canadian for a 3 week trip. Is that too high or is it reasonable? (My budget stuff is based on 5,000)

Should I fly into the southern island and work my up or should i start north and head south?

What is New Zealand like during their fall?
