Itinerary for 4 weeks in England and Wales

Hi all,

I'm in the beginning stages of planning a 4 week trip to England and Wales for my partner and I. We are planning on going in September.

We are going to spend about a week visiting friends in London (where I lived for a year when I was younger). After that we are hoping to head out of the city and enjoy some of the more scenic parts of England and Wales that I didn't get the chance to visit when I was living in the country a decade ago.

We are both people who would rather spend a longer time in an area to explore. We really want to do some walking along the national trails, see castles, visit quaint towns, see some museums, etc. There are so many to see that we are having a very hard time deciding. Here is my skeleton plan:

5-7 days in London 2 days in the Cotswolds 4 days Wales (Offa's Dyke Path trail?) 4 days Yorkshire Dales 4 days Lake District 4 days driving back down the East (Alnwick Castle, Skegness..?) 2 days back in London

Does that seem like a good amount of time in each? Should we rent a car to make things easier? Any recommendations on where to go or stay?
