Study Abroad Visa issue question (EU)

Some background, so I'm currently an American college student and studying abroad in Spain for 3 months from January until the end of March. When I went to get my student visa in early November I was told I didn't need one since my school's trimester is less than 90 days (84 days total) so they didn't give me one. However, my flight back from Barcelona is scheduled for April 17th (I arrive January 7th). This means in total I'm scheduled to be in Spain for around 104 days. However, the consulate here didn't realize this, and now it's too late for a new appointment to get a visa (earliest available appointment is in mid-February). I was wondering what my options here are, if I should be able to talk to a consulate or something like that in Europe, if I should plan to travel to non-Schengen countries during my stay to make the 90 days thing work, or if I'm screwed. Thank you!
