Basics: Flying out of Toronto, ~9 days including flights, Jan-Mar, $1,000-$1,500 CDN ($800-$1,200 USD). Speak English, conversational Japanese, survival French & German, would be willing to get a new language to survival level.
Priorities: I want to go somewhere that's fairly warm and sunny (10-25 degrees), and where the cities, food, and daily life feel very different to what I'm used to. I like architecture, history, cycling, and scenic views. My favorite vacation is a few days in an interesting city, a few days in quaint small towns, and a day or two in nature, and I'd prefer somewhere where crime isn't a big concern.
Thoughts so far: SEA seems natural but flights are pricy from here ($1,000+ CDN). My thoughts were southern China (Guangzhou, Haikou, etc) or Taiwan around Tainan ($600-$800 CDN flights).
Other destination possibilities? Yucatán is a place I have been to and liked, although it felt like the cultural sites were mostly ruins and the cities/towns didn't feel as different as in Asia. Other destinations I was looking at with affordable flights were Algeria, Morocco, and coastal Suriname but that might be a bit adventurous for me. I haven't seen anything else in the Americas or Africa that seems to fit my priorities but I don't know those areas as well.
Anyone has suggestions for towns to visit Guangdong/Hainan or southern Taiwan? Or suggestions for what countries to consider outside Asia? Thank you so much for any of your help! 🌞
