Going overseas first time - Italy

I am trying to book a trip to Italy for my first trip overseas and have been waiting a very long time to be able to do this. I am going alone.

First, I was wondering, does 3-4 weeks seem like a good amount of time ? (Too much? Too little?)

I don’t have any set plans yet but I want to fly into Rome, spend five days or so and then work my way down through Tuscany and spend time in Florence (more than a week) and small towns I can travel to. Possibly go to Almalfi and Naples and then go back to Rome to fly out. I just want to take my time and immerse myself in the life and art there, this isn’t a hardcore do it all/grind trip.

What should I buy in advance besides a Eurorail pass? Any suggestions on small towns to not miss?

And lastly i haven’t been on a plane for many many years- flying from NYC to Rome nonstop whatever airline I do fly - what airlines are recommended?

All suggestions helpful thank you !
