First international travel: Italy for 6 days. Help?!

My friend and I will be in Italy in early June. We'll be flying from LAX to Fiumicino in Rome and our Airbnb will be in Florence. I realize 6 days is not nearly enough to experience all Italy has to offer but I'd still like to make sure we have a good experience. Our main goals are to see as much as we can of Florence, Rome, Venice, and if we can find another airbnb, Amalfi. We're planning to use public transportation to go between cities and don't mind waking up early or coming back late. I know we don't have much time so I'm just trying not to waste any of it.

I'm looking for restaurant, nightlife, museum, shopping, and sightseeing suggestions. Obviously we'd like to see all the iconic things but I'm open to anything, even hidden gems. I'm also curious as to what the every day culture is like. What should we avoid doing? What will make our stay easier? What will keep us safe? Any advice would be very much appreciated!
