Where are some good places to go in the “Stan” countries?

I’m curious about traveling to Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan with a buddy, and possibly other countries in Central Asia and the Middle East. I don’t know how much time we would spend in each country or the whole in total, but we are genuinely curious about traveling there, how to get around, places/cities to visit, and any other information that could be useful.

We are Americans who would be backpacking. We would be coming from Southeast Asia, most likely Northern India.
