My girlfriend (25) and I (26) are looking for recommendations for travel destinations for an extended weekend vacation this summer (June) located somewhere in the Midwest region. We live in central IL and are willing to drive 8-10 hours max one way to reach our destination. We’ve gone to Florida every year for the past 3 years and are looking for something different, like scenic views, mountain areas, hiking, rather than just the beach.
We’ve gone to Door County before and enjoyed it. Originally I thought the Gatlinburg area looked pretty interesting, but I read some threads trashing on how touristy it is. I love some of the Airbnb’s located super close to the mountain range. The morning views look breathtaking. We’d mainly want to go hiking and what not at least for a few hours 2-3 of the days but would most likely end up venturing to find something to do at night. Is the strip area really that bad?
Any other recs?
