Currently me (21M) and my girlfriend (20F) are trying to plan a 10-14 day trip in Switzerland and possibly northern Italy next January. We have both done study abroad a through school (i just return from three weeks in southeast Asia) and her and i did 10 days together in spain on a high school trip. This is a little different now as we are actually trying to plan it ourselves. We expect to start in Zurich and work our way south, possibly to Milan. Traveling by train is very important to us and we are actually considering just booking like an 8 night package on Vacation By Rails doing their Magical Moments of Switzerland trip. We are not familiar with this group though, and we are concerned that their website lists no reviews, though tripadvisor seemed to have some favorable ones for similar experiences through this group.
We are hoping to get some feedback on this group and the packages they offer, as well as tips for traveling by train in general across this region. Our overall trip budget is between 3,000 and 4,000 per person. Obviously it’s easier to purchase a package like the one through Vacation By Rails because hotel, transit, a few meals, and some activities are already planned, but of course this is likely more expensive than doing such a trip (hopping from city to city visiting sites and staying in 3 star hotels) by yourself. Can anyone speak to the quality of such packages and whether they would have rather tried to plan things themselves (take in mind we are young travelers on a budget when comparing your own experiences and making recommendations).
Further, we really are just starting this process but are extremely excited, so we’d love tips for cities to visit, other websites to browse trip packages on, or anything else we should know! Thanks!
