How do you handle dogs and a road trip?

So i have a drive cross country coming up, California to New York.

We’re not making a lot of stops. 3 day trip at the max honestly depending on some things and blahblahblah.

However, I was planning on getting a small 2 year old dog from a shelter in a few weeks, would it be a bad idea to get one before the trip? In my opinion a dog wouldn’t be so bad, maybe if we stop every so often i still think we wouldn’t put too much of a damper on our trip, but my boyfriend disagrees.

Any advice? Objections? Just comments in general? Maybe even a few stop ideas (we only have the grand canyon and Boulder, CO planned as of right now honestly so ill even take ideas) !! TY everyone
