Want to Travel to Manila and Jakarta. Why is there so much hate surrounding these cities, is it really that bad?

Next spring, I want to travel to the Philippines and Indonesia, stopping in the two countries' capital cities along the way. However, whenever I research these cities, I always hear how these cities are not at all worth visiting, should be avoided, etc.. Are these cities really that bad? Is this really true, if so, why? Also would it be safe for 20 y.o. male traveling solo there? What are the some of the top sights/things to do in these cities. Any insight helps!
