If you live in a city where bicycling is used as transportation over driving, how do you locate your bike amongst others?

I visited Amsterdam a few years ago and noticed what looked like parking garages for bicycles. How do you find your bike amongst all the others? I was told most bikes look the same to increase the odds of reducing theft. Wouldn't that make it even harder to find it?
