Travel to Canada

Forgive me as I couldn't find a better sub to ask this.

A friend and I are driving to Anchorage, Alaska for his US government training. To get there we need to travel through Canada, crossing the border twice. Will we have any issues? My concern is our trip or maybe even just me being deemed non-essential and being denied entry. Primarily my concern is the trip is essential for him, but technically not for me as I'm not going for training, just to split driving duties. This is last minute, we are leaving tomorrow and will be at the border in a few days. Worst case scenario is I buy a flight back from Montana instead of Anchorage. Any advice or input?
