Hi everyone! This might be long, so please forgive me. I need any and all advice right now to make sure i'm making the right decisions and going about this the right way.
My wife and I have been living in Juneau, AK. Because of current events-related circumstances, we were forced to leave Juneau and head down to the lower 48. The trip down was awful- first the car was totaled, then our passports and wallets were stolen. We had to buy an entirely new car to finish the drive, and were luckily able to get through the border with our birth certificates, but it was a long and stressful process.
We have been living in WA ever since, waiting to build up our savings again and for things to calm down a little so that we can move back to Juneau. We are going to be moving back in September. However- we have two issues.
We still don't have passports. We had notified police, but they never turned up. Because of passport agencies being closed we weren't able to get new ones. I saw that some of the agencies open back up monday, but with "significant delays."
- This would be ideal, but we are not sure if they will come in time, and it's expensive to do without knowing for sure we will get them- especially if we purchase them and they end up coming to our WA address when we're already back in AK.
We have thought about getting WA Enhanced license's that allow for land border crossings into Canada, but all WA dmv's are closed until further notice and there has been no word on when they will open up again. As of today, there still has not been any updates and the local DMV's are all closed.
- This would be okay, but WA enhanced license's are expensive(80$ a person), and we're going to have to get AK licenses when we move back anyway, so it seems like a waste of money to pay 160$ for something we will use for a month or two.
We would really prefer to drive. Flying is not an option because we need to bring our car(though I suppose if we had to we could sell it and buy a new one in Juneau) and the ferry is unpredictable and expensive, especially with a moving truck, and what i'm hearing from friends in AK is that you can't rely on it at all right now.
Unfortunately we can't wait until after September to move. I am starting a Master's program in Juneau, and our lease here ends in September. Does anyone have any advice? Should we try one of the options above? Just show up to the border with our birth certificates and a copy of our lease and hope for the best? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks!
