Time to Stop Using Airbnb- a nightmare story

My girlfriend and I temporarily moved from Seattle to Minneapolis after learning we were going to be working from home for the rest of 2020. We researched across the country places to stay and had planned on doing a few months in Minnesota and then Florida at her parents place.

We don’t drive, we have a cat, and we had 4 months. We didn’t want to bring our stuff from Seattle, as we will be moving back, but we just wanted some out door space and parks.

We arrived to our dream, a house just like I grew up in (I’m from Mpls), in my fav neighborhood. On the first morning the host called me and said we had to get out. They had sold the house. The host told us they would cover the cost of our relocation. Our vacation days we had planned on me showing my gf my hometown ended up frantically looking for a place to live.

We contacted Airbnb within the 24 hours of notice per the guest refund policy where they say they will aid you in relocating and the differences in cost would be covered by them or the host.

The host immediately got hostile after we had contracted Airbnb. They threatened to give us nothing. Airbnb while slow to reply, would reply to us and promised us that our costs would be covered. After a few days of negotiations that continued to be hostile, Airbnb want awol. Completely stopped replying to messages, couldn’t get through to anyone on the phone that gave any response other than “we’ll work on it” despite our deadline of being out of the house was approaching.

I lost faith in Airbnb and was very afraid we were going to be out without any help on costs that we had calculated at a minimum would be $8k. We convinced the hosts to give us $3500 and whatever furniture we wanted. I contacted Airbnb, nothing. A day before we were supposed to be out, someone tried to enter our front door. It was a friend of the host there to grab what she wanted. Her and the realtor took the two most crucial pieces of furniture we needed. They then evicted us in the spot saying that they would t give us the 3500 check if we didn’t get out right then and there. I still haven’t heard anything from Airbnb and I am still being charged for my 4 month stay atm as my reservation hasn’t been cancelled or reversed.

In the end we were forced to sign a 6 month lease. We won’t be staying with my girlfriends family for the holidays. We both used a week of vacation to get settled. Our costs are 2x what we had planned to spend. And Airbnb still has t done anything, in fact as I said they won’t even cancel our reservation that we’ve been locked out of.

Airbnb’s treatment of guests is disgusting.
