How do prescription medications work when traveling? If I have a prescription in the US, and I'm going to be living overseas for a few months travelling, what are options for getting those medications if needed?

I've never travelled internationally, I'm starting to lay the groundwork to travelling to and living in New Zealand for a few months. This will be in 3-4 years, but I'm beginning to plan everything now.
