My husband and I are starting to plan for a big anniversary trip in 1-2 years (timeline dependent on COVID-19), and he really wants to go to one of the hotels he's seen with private plunge pools. We have enough saved up to do something pretty nice, especially as we've had to cancel all of our travel and trips this spring and fall. We've never done an all-inclusive or spent too much time at a resort when we've traveled, so we're thinking of going all-out this time and heading to somewhere like Jade Mountain in St. Lucia or Samabe in Bali.
Now, here's the wrinkle: I hate pools. I was on a swim team for over ten years and a life guard through high school and college, so I have seen some shit (as well as used tampons, vomit, corn on the cob, diapers, and condoms). Pools are gross, and now that I'm not getting medals or getting paid, I've made it a rule to only ever swim in my family's pool.
My husband's always been a good sport about going to tropical destinations with great beaches so we can both enjoy the water (so hard on him, I know... /s), but I know he'd actually prefer to lounge in a pool with a lovely view of the ocean since he's not the strongest swimmer.
I realize that the best answer here would be to just let it go and enjoy myself--that very few people get sick from pool water, and I'm overthinking it, but...I've tried that, and it's just really impossible to not think of the time I was giving swim lessons and ended up standing in a cloud of diarrhea from one of my students, or watched a guy projectile vomit into the pool right before he fell into the floating mess he'd made...I'd also like to enjoy this vacation rather than have it be really expensive exposure therapy.
SO, does anyone know what the typical pool-cleaning practices are at hotels with private plunge pools? Is the water changed between guests? Do they rely on filters and chemicals like a regular pool? Just chemicals? If anyone knows--even if you just have experience at one resort and aren't sure what the industry-standard is, I'd really appreciate it.
