Is each state original to the point where you'll get a different experience in all of them? Or are some roughly similar to the point where you won't miss out on a couple if you go to one of them? It's kind of hard since the United States is so big and has so many states. I guess something to consider though is what exactly I would like to see. I'm not that much concerned with history or buildings. I want to visit different kind of settings. By that I mean different types of cities, different types of suburbs, different types of rural countryside, beaches, forests, mountains, plains etc. I'm sure the majority of states have overlapping features like mountains and forests of course, but I still don't have enough geographical knowledge or oversight to truly know how different states are from one another. I wouldn't want to travel to two different states that had largely similar geography. It would just be a repeat and ultimately a waste of time and money.
