I’m of Moroccan descent, and I’ve recently been getting more interested in the idea of traveling more through the Arab World and exploring my parents homeland. Thing is, though, my past experiences of it (Morocco, specifically) have been either through very industrial and corporate cities like Casablanca or rather poor and plain ‘suburb’-ish living areas, and so while I’ve enjoyed elements of living there there isn’t much to do or see as a tourist and it can get boring fairly fast. I’m looking for places in the Middle East and North Africa with rich culture, architecture, and things to do, sort of like Istanbul in Turkey and other bits of Europe. I’ve been told by an arab friend that the Gulf states don’t have what I’m looking for, that they have relatively little history and are more New York-ish? I did not personally enjoy NYC that much, and I’m not looking for something like that again. But I also wouldn’t know how accurate their assessment is on this.
