Hi all. Well it's month #6 of sitting around at home, so I figured I'd get an early start mapping out our honeymoon next year (assuming borders are open), and would love some input on how people would split up 2 weeks in Venice, Florence, and Amalfi Coast.
Fiancé and I have both been to Florence (me about 3 years ago, him 5), and Venice (we went together 2 years ago), but the Amalfi Coast is new for us. Amalfi Coast seems out of the way enough that we don't see ourselves visiting again for a while after this trip, so we do want to make sure a good chunk of our time is spent there. We considered adding in Lake Como somehow, but that also seems quite out of the way, and we're not sure we could do justice to it in just a few days.
Right now we have tentatively planned for the first 2 weeks in September:
*Flying in from US to Venice*
Venice: spending 3 nights, likely during Regata Storica/Film Festival. We visited Venice together only a couple years ago, but despite the Disneylandiness of it, we really loved the calmness of the city at night, and have often talked about returning. Also we thought the first part of the trip being somewhere we've been before would be a good idea while we're recovering from jet lag anyway.
*2 hour train from Venice to Florence*
Florence: 3 nights, including maybe a quick day trip to Tuscany for wine tasting. I've done more of the big "touristy" things (David etc.) than he has, but I don't mind seeing things again. We both love Florence but don't want to spend a ton of time here this trip, because we know we'll be back again someday relatively soon.
*3 hour train from Florence to Naples, 1.5 hour shuttle from Naples to Positano*
Positano: 3 nights. Probably the part of the trip we're most excited about thanks to pretty Instagram pictures, but we've heard Positano is quite small (and the most expensive--we're planning to splurge on our hotel here), so we are erring on the side of staying here for 3 nights and sticking close to Positano (no day trips anywhere). Does 3 nights sound reasonable?
*1 hour ferry from Positano to Capri*
Capri: 4 nights. Not sure if 4 nights is overkill, but we've always heard wonderful things about Capri, and how you really need to stay several nights to get a good feel for the place. We definitely want to do the Blue Grotto and the chairlift, but no other "must do" activities here. We are considering using Capri as a base to do day trips to other towns (like Ravello and Amalfi), which I know is going against usual traffic. I also haven't heard of people really using Capri as a base... is this a terrible idea? Should we stay fewer nights in Capri and add in a different area? We're trying to minimize packing + unpacking and moving hotels too much, but I guess 2 nights in Capri + 2 nights somewhere else would be doable, if not ideal.
*1 hour ferry from Capri to Naples*
Naples: 2 nights. Not the highlight of our trip by any means, but we do want to see Pompeii and Vesuvius, and not rush through them in one day. The morning of the 3rd day, we'd be flying back home.
Any suggestions? We have a pretty good grasp on Venice and Florence because we've been before, but we're mostly drawing blanks when it comes to the rest of the trip. If it helps, we typically enjoy a good mix of activities (hiking, sightseeing, some shopping), stuffing ourselves with good food/drink (not difficult to do in Italy of course), and relaxing (beach/pool etc). We know Sorrento is a common base for Amalfi Coast, but we'd prefer to stay in the actual AC areas, rather than do a bunch of day trips from Sorrento.
