Can a US Citizen fly within Mexico with an expired passport

So im trying to fly to Mexico City in a couple of months to go visit my girlfriend. I currently live in San Diego, so getting to Tijuana isn't a problem. The thing is, im not sure how long it will take for me to renew my expired passport that expired in February. Does anyone have any experience with this?? Its like a 20 hour drive to Mexico City
