Has anyone ever had a family member/friend die while abroad and that local government keep reaching out to do an investigation?
Sorry if this is the wrong place to post this. I’ve looked everywhere and can’t find answers.
My FIL(American) died while traveling in Armenia last year. He was 74 and had heart issues, but had been given a clean bill of health from his doctor before his trip. It was a bit of a shock when he passed, but made sense.
Shortly after he passed and while we were making arrangements to get his body back to the US, the Armenian government reached out. They said they recommended an investigation because ‘things didn’t seem right’. He died in his sleep at a family friend’s house, so we didn’t understand how it ‘didn’t seem right’. We declined them and figured they were just trying to get money out of us.
Since then, they’ve reached out numerous times. The latest call from them was followed up by a letter. Again, they were urging us to allow for an investigation. This time they also said they’d let us know about any future expenses.
Has anyone ever dealt with something like this? Is it normal for a third world country to try to get money out of a family? Or would they only reach out if something truly was fishy with the death? Any help is greatly appreciated!
