Hi folks! My girlfriend and I are planning a trip to the Balkans for when travel is safe again (Hopefully Spring 2021). We are budget travelers interested in history (old and modern), food, small towns and nature, and are looking to travel to multiple cities. Any recommendations?

This is still in the very early stages of planning (we have until December 2021 to use our air miles) but we aren't very familiar with the region and are looking for advice on where to go.

We are especially interested in the region for its history and would love to experience art, architecture, and important locations related to Greek, Roman/Byzantine, and Ottoman periods and during the war. For this reason one of the major spots we wanted to see was Sarajevo due to its older and more recent historical significance. Any recommendations for spots in Sarajevo or other areas of great historical significance in the region?

From there, we definitely wanted to get in on the natural beauty of Croatia and spend some time near the ocean. I'm aware of the major coastal cities of Dubrovnik and Split but since we are on a budget and are OK roughing it somewhat, I would love some recommendations on smaller, probably cheaper coastal spots to visit in Croatia (bonus points if we can do a day-trip to someplace with natural beauty, like Krka park or Plitvice lakes).

From here I am really open to suggestions. We thought we might be able to go to a third location; possibly Serbia, possibly Hungary, possibly Slovenia, or possibly even crossing over to Venice.

On the other hand, if there are smaller places between Sarajevo and Croatia that you think we could spend 10-14 days visiting, by all means please let us know! Overall our biggest restraint is going to be budget so if you have any advice that would save us money we would love that. Thanks!
