Is language a problem in Italy?

So basically I want to live in Italy, Verona to be specific, but there are A LOT of different dialects all over Italy, and where I leave dialects doesn't even exist. So the question is, if I go where the dialect is veneto (a very different dialect of the italian language) should I learn italian or veneto to speak? Veneto is very different from italian, but it isn't a language.
