Hi everyone
I’m from Auckland and I’m planning/hoping to do an end of October road trip in the South Island. I currently have a loose itinerary starting from Christchurch and going through Lake Tekapo, Mount Cook, Wanaka, Queenstown, Milford Sound and Te Anau (might add more later as I figure out how many days this will be). I’m planning on doing a few hikes like the hooker valley track, isthmus peak, and a couple others as well as Milford sound kayaking and Nevis bungy.
This will be my first solo roadie and so I’m torn between either getting a self contained campervan and staying mostly in free DOC sites and some top 10 holiday parks when I need to shower. The other option is hiring a car instead and staying in hostels or cheap motels/airbnbs. The reason I’m torn is because I’m not sure which option is considered cheaper (after adding on insurance, petrol etc). I would prefer the first option as it gives me more freedom but would be keen to hear your advice as most people seem to go campervan if they’re a group or a couple but I hardly hear about solo campervanning.
Also any rental company suggestions would be great - I’m currently looking at Jucy or Mad Campers. Or any advice in general I appreciate it in advance! :)
