Sorry for the rant here, but I think it’s important for people to hear.
I was traveling to Cancun, Mexico with my mom for Christmas last summer. When we got to airport security, the travel assistant asked “Oh, where is your husband?” to my mom. She has raised me (14M) mostly by herself for a long time now (my parents split when I was around 6).
Now I understand that he probably didn’t know better and he was very kind and light-hearted when he asked, but I just want others to know that they can’t always assume the entire situation. A simple comment like that was pretty hurtful to my mom, even if it wasn’t intentional.
She ended up just saying that “her husband was at home” and we got through the check-in.
I mean no shame to the man who asked this, he was very nice and had good intentions. My reason for sharing this story is to let others be spared from this kind of interaction. Please just make sure to be careful with what you say as to not hurt anyone.
Sorry for the long post! Also thanks for hearing me out. :)
