Silly question for Americans. Do you go through the customs in the US when flying internationally?

I’m working out some details about my upcoming travel and my parents are telling me I would go through customs when leaving the US, which doesn’t make sense. You go through customs when you are entering a country, not when you’re leaving right?

I don’t recall this 2yrs ago when I flew internationally. I know domestic flights definitely don’t have customs but since when is it required to go through customs when you leave the US? Am I remembering things wrong?
