Earlier today, I was flying back to my home country from the USA. I had a layover in Frankfurt, Germany and that was where I witnessed something really strange and disturbing. In the waiting area in front of the gate, I saw four men come up to a woman that was sitting all alone and they aggressively started asking her questions. The men identified themselves as cops and started flashing their IDs at the woman, asking her to show them her passport. As far as I could tell, the men were German, one of them was about 10-15 years older than the rest and seemed to be their “leader”. They were all wearing regular clothing, sweatpants and t-shirts, they spoke English with a thick German accent. The older man was leading the whole interrogation.
The woman didn’t respond and tried to ignore them and was on a Facetime call with what seemed to be a friend. When the man wasn’t getting anywhere speaking English, he switched to a formal Arabic with a pretty good accent. That was when things started escalating, and I couldn’t really see what that woman looked like because she had a hoodie on. I assumed that she was an old lady that couldn’t speak English well and that the reason why they were interrogating her was because she looked shady. Well, I’ve never been so wrong, when she pulled down the hoodie, I realized that the woman was actually a young girl, a teenager. She was really scared, and these “cops” were being overly aggressive towards her, heckling her, being extremely passive aggressive and were mocking her reaction to the situation. They even went as far as threatening to restrain her by force if she tried to stand up or move from the area she was in, because she was gathering her stuff to leave. The four of them were surrounding her and were really intimidating her.
She eventually responded and said that she doesn’t know them and that they’re not wearing any police uniform and that she doesn’t believe they’re cops. Again, they started flashing their IDs again without really letting her read them, and eventually the leader made a call and said that he called for a police officer so that she would believe that they are cops. Five minutes passed as they were still surrounding her and making her feel unsafe, not reassuring her whatsoever, and while they kept asking her to show them her passport and to hang up the phone. Finally, a female police officer showed up and said, “they are policemen”. The girl told them that she didn’t know, that she was really scared and that they weren’t wearing any police uniform. The officer said “they are citizen police, you’ve lived in the US you must have heard of that”. The men’s speech was very often sarcastic, and they mocked the girl’s reaction, especially the leader - “You believe me now? I showed you my ID and you can read English yeah?”
Two of the men were kind of silent and knew that what their leader was going overboard but didn’t really do anything to calm him down. Eventually she gave them her passport, and while they asked her questions like how much cash she had on her, where she was going and the purpose of her visit, one of the men took multiple pictures of her passport with his iPhone. After that, the leader asked her if she had any drugs or weapons in her bags, to which she replied no. Then silent boy was told to search her bag, which he did after telling her that she can pay close attention to how he searches it, in an attempt to reassure her because he could see she was in distress, to say the least. The leader then sarcastically added “yes you can put your eyes inside the bag”. Once they were done with their “search”, they all gathered up and left with the policewoman and headed straight out – they didn’t really linger or stop anyone else.
You might be asking “op wtf were you doing just watching it unravel?” – well guys I feel really bad for not stepping in while it was happening because I was selfishly looking out for myself and did not want to risk getting tangled up in something like this, especially with potentially racist power-abusing pigs. Right after they left, I talked to the girl, and it turns out she’s 17 flying alone for the first time and going back to her home country to visit her grandparents and other family members. I comforted her as much as I could and tried to get her to forget the whole thing by changing the subject and letting her know that this is an anomaly and that they probably are racist and abusive pigs that picked on her because she’s young and alone. It turned out that we have a couple of mutual friends and that she went to the same high school as my best friend.
TLDR; Four men claiming to be cops aggressively interrogated a teenage girl traveling alone in front of the boarding gate, after flashing their Police IDs. They were rude, aggressive, sarcastic and they eventually got a policewoman to vouch for them. They took pictures of her passport searched her bags for drugs and weapons and then left after scaring the shit out of her. The girl was 17, was going alone to visit her grandparents and it turned out that we have a couple of mutual friends.
I’d love to hear any theories as to what this shit was – Do you think it was some undercover cops pursuing some kind of lead? Was it some kind of scam, robbery, identity theft, or was it just some random asshole off-duty cops?
