How much of your travel experiences are left to chance?

If you think back to some of your best and worst trips do you ever wonder how much of that impression was a matter of timing and luck?

This might be more relevant for city breaks but still;

Last year I travelled to Krakow and Budapest and loved both, but right before I left I heard friends who had been to both saying different opinions about one or the other, I went, had an incredible time and plan to go back.

I also went to Vienna and hated it. Other friends loved it. City is pretty, but I never really felt comfortable and had some mixed experiences with finding decent food options, I wouldn't recommend it to anybody based on my time there.

Then it got me thinking, how much of your experience is just random luck that first time? A bad trip in, some dodgy service at a restaurant and now your whole view of everything has changed even if those things aren't necessarily true.

Have you had any particularly positive or negative experiences that you felt were as much down to timing and personal decisions than anything else?
