I have a 3 month sabbatical next summer 2022 and want to take the family on a European vacation (from Oregon state in USA). Family is me (35m) my wife (40f) and 13 and 16yo daughters. Not wealthy by any means but have been saving and have a $15k budget and would love to take a 6 week vacation if possible.
I dont know if I need to get a travel agent but would prefer not too since I have never used one before for traveling and don't see the value in it ( I could be wrong) my wife enjoys planning trips and finding deals but neither of us have been to Europe before.
Loose plans as of now are flying from pdx to Dublin Ireland and spending about 10 days touring the country and visiting my sister who lives there with her husband. Then head out to do the following:
- fly to London and spend 4 days sight seeing
- fly to Paris and spend 4 days sight seeing
- fly to Barecelona and spend 7 days enjoying the beach and sight seeing
- fly to Rome and spend 10-14 days exploring while traveling to Florence and then Venice
- fly to Athens and spend 5 days sight seeing
- return to Dublin and complete round trip flight back to Portland
I estimate travel will cost around $5500 with very light baggage. It seems like I can find accommodations at any of these places for around $1000 a week. Which would leave me about $3500 in spending money but I could afford to spend an extra $5k if needed to make this a once in a lifetime trip.
I plan on getting metro passes in each city and am looking for suggestions on any passes that include outings and museums (like the Roma pass)
I like museums and old architecture but my wife and daughters enjoy beaches/swimming and more active activities. No one in the family enjoys seafood but otherwise are open to experience local foods and wines.
I would much rather take a train then fly but it seems like it is much cheaper to fly, would love to hear people experience about flying or riding trains in Europe.
IN SHORT: trying to plan a 15k-20k trip for a family of four to a bunch of different European destinations and am looking for peoples experience and tips. Also need to know if I am just crazy about this plan in general.
This plan has been in my head for years but have only spent a couple hours looking at things to estimate prices and could be missing things.
