First time traveling for a while looking for advice on where to sleep

So I'm going up to New York for a week we have a hotel and a campground booked but we have one night without a place to sleep. Should we try and find a hotel with empty rooms or should we try to find a rest stop or a grocery store parking lot to spend the night? Edit: upstate New York near Niagara Falls
