My family is traveling to Montego Bay, Jamaica next week. I keep getting mixed signals about the safety of the area. I have traveled to a lot of places I think are pretty dangerous, but just going out to see the market and maybe get some food and have my hair braided by a nice native woman sounds pleasant. But half the people I talk to, and the resort page say that crime is rampant and guest will be refused from exiting unless going on a paid event. How much truth is there to this?
I traveled before, and some of my more dangerous outings are as follows. Bahrain comes to mind running from police for a few hours because my group simply walked out of a hotel that had a bar and we were white, and no extradition treaty. Also Goa, India during the festival of lights (Diwali) we had to run 5 miles through the street to get back to our ship because the taxi couldn't dive us further and he was worried that the locals were going to attack his car if he interrupted any of the block parties. And lastly Panama City, Panama during their Independence festival, people were running through the streets high and drunk starting fights. Every few minutes, someone jumped out at us screaming "PANAMANIA!!!!" And tried to start boxing with me, I would just scream back, "No, no, Americana."
