Never traveled, thinking about going to St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands this winter, any thoughts or tips?

I’ve never been out of the states before, and possibly thinking about bringing a friend. I know nothing about the Virgin Islands, but I know I want to go to a nice beach for a week. I’m from north texas, and I plan to ball on a budget, I’m seeking simple pleasures mainly, but I’m open to anything. Sorry I can’t be as detailed.

Are there any customs or advice I should know about before I book anything? How to not waste my money on tourist traps/scams and get to the real culture and just chill on the beach, sightsee, and meet new people?

Please help a new traveler out.
