I'm planning a trip down the USA West Coast, starting from Seattle. Really thinking of sleeping in my car but idk where it'd be safe to do so or if that's a viable option.

I've driven cross-country before and just slept in my car the entire way at rest areas and a Walmart. But for some reason I'm having doubts about doing it this time. I want to do it, it'd save me like $400 and give me a lot more freedom since I wouldn't need to worry about check in times or how long I stay in a particular city or whatever. I just don't know if it's viable and safe. I'm a guy driving a newer Honda Civic.

What do you guys think and recommend? I can afford a hotel or two, but I just don't *want* to pay that money and be bound by the timeframes and whatnot, I'd prefer to be free to spend as long as I like in each city instead of spending half a day here half a day there. Would sleeping at rest areas and Walmarts be safe?
