Why are companies in Europe canceling flights in the last 3 weeks of January?

I was planning to travel to visit my parents in the middle of January and my flight got canceled. So I started searching for a replacement and noticed that a lot of flights were canceled. And not just flights to my home country (Bosnia) but all over Europe. I understand the reason for reducing the number of flights, but I don't understand why they are removing flights for just these 3 weeks at the end of January.
